At Nthawira Primary School in Lirangwe-Blantyre District of southern Malawi, pupils are learning under trees due to a shortage of school classrooms and head teacher Eshedrick Nkhwasi was asked by Think Malawi and UYO to help explain the difficulties of teaching outside.
Highlighting some of the challenges, head teacher Nkhwasi, explained that it is difficult for pupils to concentrate during lessons as they are disrupted by people and animals (goats, cattle) moving around and that the school is along a busy road.
Classes are also disturbed due to the affects of weather upon the pupils and the teaching. During rainy season as learners are dismissed whenever it starts raining.
"During this period pupils can stay at home for more than 3 days if the rains persist" said Nkhwasi.
During hot weather strong winds always disturb lessons and that excessive sun makes pupils complain of headaches.
"This has resulted into high absenteeism among pupils due to poor learning conditions" he said.
Nkhwasi explained that teachers are also affected as teaching outside poses difficulties as teachers are are interrupted with distracted students due to the outside learning environment disturbing them who then distract their peers.
The lack of proper classrooms at Nthawira Primary School not only jeopardizes the academic progress of the pupils but also hinders teacher abilities to provide a quality education.
It is a situation that urgently needs addressing to ensure that all children have a stable and conducive learning environment.
"Your donation towards building of school blocks, will provide a safe and conducive learning atmosphere that will enable pupils to receive quality education" said head teacher Eshedrick Nkhwasi.
Think Malawi has launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise £2,000 to address challenges that the school is facing. This will go towards the £12,000 needed in total to construct the two classrooms: £5,000 has already been pledged from Think Malawi's reserves and other activities are taking place to raise the other £5,000 needed.
In our Building Classrooms, Building Futures Think Malawi alongside UYO aims to build two classrooms to provide 120 students (and thousands more in the future) with a safe and secure place to learn. Through a donation you can help to fund essential building materials like cement, bricks, and roofing sheets.
