Her Education Matters project partners, African Vision, are making a big impact this year.
So far they've completed construction of nine washrooms at schools in the area. At Mkunkhu School the teacher said the washroom has brought great change. She said that in the past, the girls were excusing themselves from classes to go home when they had their period and didn't return because of the distance. Now with the washrooms, the girls are able to manage without leaving school so they ca continue learning in the classroom, which has a positive impact on the education of the girls.
They've also doubled their target of producing sanitary pads and around 2,000 pads have already been distributed to girls in the local area. They've also distributed over 600 period packs to girls that contain 3 pants, 3 pads, a string bag and 2 tablets of soap to support them during their period.
The last part of the project has been introducing mentoring sessions which have been a great success. Many of the girls don't understand the education process, don't have role models or exposure to opportunities. These sessions have helped the girls share their concerns and as well as see some of their potential ahead.
African Vision will continue with these projects and in their next phase they hope to reach girls at even more schools.
