Our team of intrepid Pedal with a Purpose cyclists will ride from London to Glasgow over six days in August 2023. Why? We want to raise awareness and funds for education projects with Think Malawi. The Scots have a proud tradition of close ties with Malawi, and we look forward to meeting some of those people during our expedition.
If you believe in the importance of education, supporting young people or helping others in practical ways, then we’d love your support.
Education in Malawi
A typical child in Malawi faces many barriers in life which prevent them from completing their education. This stops them from going on to fulfil their potential, in terms of their desired career, and from equipping themselves with the knowledge needed to support themselves and their family.
In Malawi, there were 124 primary school students on average to each classroom in 2012
Primary and secondary schooling is a given in the UK. In Malawi, only 52% of children complete their primary schooling
How your donation can help
Think Malawi is a UK charity which works direct with grassroots NGOs in Malawi who identify barriers to education, and then with our support they work with local communities to tackle them.
These include projects to support girls education. Mothers receive training and access to equipment to make reusable sanitary pads. This help prevent girls from missing up to 5 days of school each month when they have their periods.
We support literacy projects too, including through literacy hubs, community libraries and after school clubs.
We have also enabled remote learning, enabling Malawian students to receive career and readiness to work skills from trainers around the world.
Think Malawi is run by volunteers who all work remotely, meaning that over 90% of the income we receive can go direct to the projects we support. With the world facing so many big challenges, it can be difficult to know where to begin to tackle them. We have over 15 years’ experience working direct with practical, grassroots education projects in Malawi. We have built up the knowledge and network necessary to ensure that donations are used efficiently and effectively.
We’re delighted to have received support from Tour de France pro cyclist Fred Wright, who sent us this message of support:
I wish the riders the best for their epic adventure across Britain. It’s a great chance for the cycling community to support Think Malawi’s vital education projects while taking on a big cycling challenge. Finishing the ride in Glasgow while the World Championships are going on will be a real buzz. Fingers crossed I’ll be racing there myself!
Please join Fred in supporting this important cause, by making a personal donation today.
If we can raise £3,000 then it will enable us to implement an education project which would benefit hundreds or even thousands of students in Malawi. The more we raise, the more lives you can help to improve!
We’d love to hear from businesses who would like to become a sponsor of the ride. The ride has already been covered by over 200 publications including The Independent, The Evening Standard and The Daily Mail. We’ll seek to ensure that our sponsors can be a part of future publicity around the ride. If you can introduce us to your employer or any other business who you have links with then please email bicycleride@thinkmalawi.org
By enabling them to complete their education, you can empower children in Malawi to avoid disease, contribute to economic growth, poverty reduction, equity, and social cohesion.
